Hathaway’s Three Steps to Summer Pregnancy Style

Anne Hathaway let her outfit do all the talking with her surprise pregnancy announcement.

On June 19, she casually stepped into the frame of her Instagram Reel in a white maxiskirt and matching blouse, dropping her arms to cradle her growing baby bump before walking out of the shot.

She posted the brief clip to Instagram set to the Barbara Lewis track, “Baby, I’m Yours,” which she also used as the post’s caption.

So it’s official: Anne Hathaway is pregnant with her third child with husband Adam Shulman.

The pair married in 2012 and share two sons, 10-year-old Jonathan and six-year-old Jack. Having already gone through two pregnancies, it’s no wonder she’s perfected the art of maternity dressing. Hathaway looked effortlessly chic in her white skirt and twisted cropped blouse with nods to her iconic Gap shirt dress by Zac Posen. With a fresh face and her hair loose, she finished off the minimalistic look with a bit of flare by throwing on a pair of Cult Gaia’s Stella sandals with dangling gold embellishments. While each individual piece is chic on it’s own, the combination is airy, elegant, and surprisingly easy to replicate and adjust to suit your own aesthetic and budget.

In just a matter of seconds, Hathaway dropped more than just a big bit of news — she also dropped the perfect summer outfit formula, whether you’re pregnant or not.

Here’s what you need to master the look this summer.

The smocked skirt

Everything starts with a skirt that every woman — pregnant or not — should consider adding to their wardrobe. Yes, the smocked fabric was already back in a big way, but there is probably no better way to incorporate the trend than with this summer’s hero piece: the white maxiskirt. The ruched waist is not only comfortable and stretchy, it adds texture to an outfit that could otherwise feel flat. Of course, you can also avoid the monotony of monochrome by adding a pattern like florals or gingham.

Hathaway’s choice of that crisp white garment made the pregnancy reveal clear without any extra words. The fabric’s stretch means it grows with you, which is a practical detail for anyone expecting.

The matching blouse

A billowy white dress may have the same breezy feel as a matching set, but it doesn’t let you bare your growing baby bump. Whether you pick out a white piece, à la Hathaway, or make the look your own with patterns or pop of color, the next step is to find a matching top for that effortless uniform look. Hathaway opted for a twisted top with a tailored appeal, but a more billowy design with open buttons would work just as well if you’re looking to cool things down.

The cropped cut of her top let the bump take center stage. It’s a trick she’s used before during previous pregnancies: keep the waistline high and the fabric light.

Thong sandals

As Elsa Hosk recently told me, “It doesn’t matter how swollen your feet are, you can still stick your foot in a flip flop.” And sure, you may love the idea of walking around in stilettos during your second or third trimester, Hathaway’s Cult Gaia heels instantly take this breezy summer outfit from day to night. So if you’re looking to dress up for a nice seated dinner, thong stilettos or kitten heels are a solid unrestrictive option.

Of course, removing the heel and opting for a statement flip-flop will save your feet a lot of pain, while still adding intrigue and elegance to the look. If dangling features would annoy you, an animal print of metallic detail should do the trick.

Just make sure your toes are up to the task with a fresh summer pedicure and you’re good to head out the door. Hathaway is currently rocking a red summer pedi, though the outlet has you covered if you’re looking for inspiration for your next shade.
