Billie Eilish Stars in The Bell Jar

Billie Eilish is set to make her feature-film debut in the upcoming adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s iconic novel, The Bell Jar. The movie, directed by Sarah Polley, is currently in production in Toronto, where Eilish was recently spotted on set.

Eilish will star as Esther Greenwood, the protagonist of the novel, which follows the psychological breakdown of a 19-year-old woman as she copes with her new life at a women’s magazine in New York City.

The photos from the set show a transformed Eilish, complete with midcentury-style clothing and chestnut-brown hair. In one photo, she looks nearly unrecognizable in a cherry-red sweater top and a red-and-gray-checkered A-line skirt.

The Bell Jar is a classic novel that explores themes of mental health, gender roles, and the ideals of womanhood. The story follows Esther Greenwood as she moves from Boston to New York City and struggles to cope with the pressures of her new life.

The novel was previously adapted into a movie in 1979, starring Marilyn Hassett and Julie Harris. The new adaptation, written and directed by Sarah Polley, promises to bring a fresh perspective to the classic story.

While The Bell Jar marks Eilish’s first feature-film role, she has previously made her acting debut in the Prime Video series Swarm, created by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover. Eilish played a supporting role as Eva, a manipulative cult leader.

Eilish isn’t the only Oscar winner on set. Sarah Polley, who previously won an Oscar for her work on Women Talking, has written the adapted screenplay for and is attached to direct The Bell Jar. Carey Mulligan, also an Oscar winner, will play Mrs. Greenwood, Esther’s mother.
