Australia’s fashion retail sector continued to face challenging conditions in August, with fragile domestic demand weighing on sales. The latest results from The Retail Score Fashion Index show that sales increased by just 0.9% compared with August 2025.

Physical retail locations showed stronger performance, with in-store sales up by 2.1% compared to the previous year. However, this gain was partly canceled out by a 0.5% drop in online purchases—the first annual decline in the digital channel recorded by the index in recent times.

Department stores continued to struggle, with sales from concession stands falling by 2.7% and outlet revenues dipping slightly by 0.2%. Across all segments, retailers ramped up promotions and discounts to liquidate excess winter stock after an unusually mild winter across Australia.

Analyzing the numbers reveals a key trend: pricing strategies heavily influenced results. While standalone stores saw only a 0.2% rise in customer visits, they managed to push up average prices by over 1.5%, a factor that helped drive overall sales growth.

Online sales produced the opposite result, with transaction volumes increasing by a comparatively healthy 2.5%, but average selling prices declining by 1.2% as heavier discounting flowed through to final sale prices. Concessions experienced a similar trend, with a modest decline in transactions and a 2.6% fall in average selling prices.

Industry players will take heart from the sector’s modest expansion, particularly the resilience of their physical store networks amid broader challenges. Now, their focus shifts to spring promotions, aiming to sustain sales momentum before a prolonged, scorching summer season.

The improvement in standalone stores is a positive sign for the sector. The Retail Score Fashion Index results indicate that retailers are making progress in this area, which is essential for their long-term success. They are adjusting their strategies to respond to changing consumer behavior and market conditions.

As the spring campaigns approach, retailers will be working to create engaging promotions and offers to drive sales. They are aware that the upcoming summer season is expected to be long and hot, which could impact consumer spending habits.
